The Blog Squad is a group of first and second-year UBC students, sharing their thoughts on their lives and experiences at UBC. These entries on LEAP are all about their academic shenanigans.

    • It feels like we have been bombarded with information these last few weeks as we deal with three issues that affect all students: housing, AMS elections and tuition increase. It is my first time experiencing this at UBC, so I’m definitely not an expert, but I have noticed two common themes. First, everyone has something to [...]
    • “UBC Student Housing and Hospitality Services | Vancouver is pleased to offer you a place in residence for the 2010/2011 Winter Session, beginning September 4, 2010.” I swear I feel like I won some million dollar lottery. Huge rounds of applauses and fireworks are going off in my head. I feel damn lucky that [...]
    • Tons of updates guys! To start, I’ve got midterm in 5 days. Three in a row: natural disasters, psychology, and sociology. I’ve been so caught up in everything else the past two weeks that I haven’t even had a chance to start studying. That’s where the week long study binge occurs. Fairly optimistic that I’ll do [...]
    • I occasionally venture to the theatres when anticipating one of the great films of my lifetime.  I’m not providing a review here, just some thoughts, so it CONTAINS SPOLIERS.  DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED IT YET. I’m going to discuss something further than the typical “Pocahontas” theme here.  Although I think that particular political (and environmental message) [...]

    • For all those attempting to get 2009 Product Data, apologies. Product Measurement Bureau (PMB) says its host server is down due to maintenance issues. They assure us it should be back later, but can’t give a time line. Currently, you see a blank screen or a “Unable to connect to the remote server” message. Try later [...]

    • A fascinating new language documentation project gets under way next week. The BOLD:PNG project (Basic Oral Language Documentation :  Papua New Guinea) involves training university students and literacy teachers to collect and curate oral texts from native speakers of the 830 indigenous languages of  Papua New Guinea, many of which are at risk [...]
    •  Has anyone taken a language through continuing education?

I've finished my degree and I want to take Japanese at night.  I looked around and I know UBC and VCC both offer it downtown, and VCC is about half the price.  But I don't know anyone who's taken languages through continuing ed at either, so I'm not sure about the quality of either.  Language courses can always end up being so flaky :S
    • Hey everyone!

I'm a 2nd year Arts student, but this year I've been taking all the 1st year Science classes I need to transfer into the Faculty of Science. (basically papers = the bane of my existence)  I know science is super competitive to get into straight from high school, but my general understanding is that once you're in college or university it's easier to transfer into the program you want.  Last term I faired about a 74% average.  Is that high enough?  Or should I be busting my butt this term to do even better?  Has anyone had any similar experiences they'd like to share?  Any input would be greatly appreciated!  :)
    • Just today I lost (well, forgot, and then couldn't find) my phone on campus--

It's a black Samsung phone, and was last seen in BUCH B209 with a striped (orange, white, green) scarf and a brown hat.

If anybody has found this phone or knows where to go look (is there a lost and found in Buchanan? on campus?), I would be most grateful!
    • Hi all!

I'm wondering if UBC will allow me to study at another institution for the summer and transfer the credits I earned there back to UBC for my next Winter Session?

My situation is that I'm a first year and I failed two courses last term. This term to be on the safe side, I'm only taking four courses to make sure I can pull my sessional average up. Given I complete all the credits this term, I still won't have enough credits to promote to second year. Now it would be very reasonable to stay in Vancouver for the Summer Session and complete the needed credits. But unfortunately I am scheduled to fly back to Hong Kong for a family event. So my question is, will UBC allow me to complete my needed credits in Hong Kong University and transfer them to my student profile in UBC?

      Thanks!
    • So I finished at UBC in December and I'll be graduating in May.  I just got an email from UBC saying that my UPass has been deactivated and I'm supposed to return it.  Of course, we all know the deactivation really doesn't mean anything-but I'm worried that they can "withhold" me from graduating if I don't return it-has anyone else finished in December and kept using their UPass until May without anything happening?
